The top fitness trends for 2021
The annual ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal® worldwide survey results were released in early January. Over 4,300 health and fitness professional ranked 41 possible trends on a scale of 1 to 10. The COVID-19 pandemic made a big impact on the 2021 survey.
- Online training (was #26 for 2020). This trend uses digital streaming technology to deliver group, individual, or instructional exercise programs online.
- Wearable technology. It was the number 1 trend since it was first introduced on the survey in 2016 - the only exception was a drop to number 3 in 2018. This includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices.
- Body weight training. Body weight training appeared for the first time on the trends survey in 2013 (at number 3). Body weight training uses minimal equipment, which makes it an inexpensive way to exercise effectively.
